Abstract
The work of reopening (unlock-1) of economic activities continued during the month of June in the country. Due to this, automobile sales in June 2020 of most auto companies including Maruti, Toyota saw improvement compared to May.
But it was below 50 percent on an annual basis. The June sales figures of various companies are telling the same story.
Passenger Vehicles
Maruti Suzuki India (MSI), the country’s largest car company, saw its sales fall 54 percent to 57,428 vehicles in June. Whereas in June last year, the company sold 1,24,708 vehicles.
Domestic sales of the company declined by 53.7 percent to 53,139 units in June. This figure stood at 1,14,861 units in June 2019. Whereas in May, the company’s total domestic sales were 13,888 vehicles. The company’s exports also declined by 56.4 percent to 4,289 units in June.
Hyundai also had the same condition
Shashank Srivastava, marketing and sales executive director of Maruti, told PTI, “If we look at the customers, we have reached 80-85 per cent of the normal level for information on car booking and booking.”
Domestic sales of Maruti’s rival Hyundai Motors also declined to 21,320 units in June. It was 42,007 vehicles in June 2019.

Loss to toyota
Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s domestic sales fell 63.53 percent to 3,866 vehicles in June. Sales of the company stood at 10,603 units in June last year. In May this year, the company sold 1,639 vehicles. However, it did not export in June 2020. While in June 2019 it exported 804 Etios cars.
Naveen Soni, senior vice-president (sales and service), Toyota Kirloskar, said that market demand was slowly improving.
Mahindra sales fall by 55 percent
Mahindra & Mahindra, the other domestic company, saw total sales fall by 55 percent to 19,358 vehicles. Last year, the company sold 42,547 vehicles in June. The company’s domestic sales also fell 53 percent to 18,505 vehicles during the period under review. It was 39,471 vehicles in June 2019.
Mahindra & Mahindra’s vehicle business, sales in the passenger vehicle, and small commercial vehicles category have started improving. Rural demand is the major stake in it.

Two-wheelers
Hero gains 4 times compared to May
In the two-wheeler category, Hero MotoCorp, the country’s largest two-wheeler company, declined by 26.88 percent to 4,50,744 vehicles. However, the company’s sales have registered a four-fold increase as compared to May. The company sold 6,16,526 vehicles in June 2019. In May 2020, the figure was 1,12,682 vehicles.
The company’s chairman Pawan Munjal said in a statement that the sale of more than four and a half lakh vehicles shows that the country’s economy has the potential to come out of any adversity.
Other two-wheeler makers TVS Motor Company reported 33.2 percent of total sales at 1,98,387 vehicles in June. In June 2019, the company sold 2,97,102 vehicles. The company also manufactures three-wheelers.
